Some women are fortunate. After having a baby, their bodies return to normal like nothing ever happened. Most women, however, have body issues after pregnancy, which stubbornly refuse to go away. If you are struggling with stretch marks, sagging skin, shrunken and/or sagging breasts, stubborn fat deposits, any combination of the aforementioned, or other after-effects, you may be a great candidate for a Mommy Makeover. If you live in the Knoxville area, our expert plastic surgery team at Knoxville Cosmetic Surgeon can help you find out more.
What is a Mommy Makeover
“Mommy Makeover” is a general term for a combination of cosmetic surgery procedures that aim at restoring a mother’s body to its pre-pregnancy condition. Since every woman’s body is unique, the exact procedures involved in a Mommy Makeover will vary according to the patient’s specific needs and desires. In general, the treatment can include procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), thigh lift, breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, and more. The liposuction can be performed in, among other areas, the patient’s legs, arms, and lower back as well as the stomach – generally, all parts on the body that can retain fat after pregnancy.
Please note that you do not have to be a mother to qualify for a Mommy Makeover. The ability to combine several procedures in a single surgery has proven highly successful and desirable for many of our female patients – of whom many do not have children. Therefore, even if you have never been pregnant before, a Mommy Makeover might still be the perfect choice for your particular situation.
The Best Candidates
The best candidates for a Mommy Makeover are female patients who are in good physical condition but have not been able to restore their body to its pre-pregnancy or otherwise desirable shape through diet and exercise. Many surgeons will require that patients be at their target weight, or very close to it, before performing any kind of plastic surgery. Patients undergoing a Mommy Makeover should exercise regularly and be on a healthy diet months in advance of the scheduled surgery date. Ideally, they are non-smokers – or quit smoking at least 3 months prior to surgery – and light drinkers. They should also have a support system in place, including friends and family, to be of assistance during the recovery period. This is particularly important if the patient has small children to care for.
What Is Involved in Having a Mommy Makeover
As with any medical procedure, there are a number of processes you must undergo before the actual surgery. You can expect to provide us with a thorough medical history and have a full medical examination before proceeding. Our surgeon may recommend you make some changes, such as losing a certain amount of weight, before surgery. The time leading up to surgery can be several weeks or even months, depending on what you need to do to prepare, the surgeon’s schedule, and other factors.
For that very reason we advise you to schedule a FREE consultation with us as early as possible by calling +1 (865) 622-4811.
A few days before surgery, our surgeon will give you a list of instructions to follow. He will tell you what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Because the Mommy Makeover is unique to each patient, these expectations will be different for each individual. For example, you may or may not be put under general anesthesia, and you may or may not require an overnight stay at a close-by surgical recovery center. Due to its importance we will discuss these details with you well in advance so you will be relaxed and comfortable going into surgery. You will have an exact plan of action for what to expect and what to do in the remaining time leading up to, during, and after your surgery.
The Recovery Period
Again, this varies according to both the extent of the procedures performed and each patient’s physical and mental condition after surgery. Obviously, each patient who just underwent surgery requires rest and as much immobility as possible for at least the first 2 weeks following the procedure. As a patient, you will have to wear a compression garment – depending on the types of procedures you have selected and the areas they are performed in – as well as bandages. Moreover, we will prescribe you pain killers for you to take in during the first couple of weeks. The good news is that having several procedures done at once will not extend your recovery time. Recovery will take as long as the most invasive of your selected treatments needs to properly heal. With that said, full recovery may occur only after a period of several months.
What Kind of Scarring Can Be Expected
Scars can be extensive as the surgery may involve many different procedures addressing many different areas on your body. At first, the scars may appear alarming. We know from experience however, that the scars will diminish over the course of the next few months. In most patients they are barely noticeable by the end of their recovery period.
